Midpipe cat
08/01/11 4:28 PM

I have access to a pair of D&D slip-ons for a very reasonable price. (I have D&D slipons on my ZZR1200 and like the way they sound/look) I know I would benefit from losing the cat in the midpipe (both in power and heat reduction) while I'm at it. I read a thread by a fellow who cut the midpipe off and re-welded, sounded like a clean mod, but access to a welder, etc., is not so easy for me.

Can the midpipe cat be removed while the pipe is still on the bike, and would there be any advice here on the procedure?

Thanks

I just got rid of the Cat out of the "Header pipe"because I'm an injured Boilermaker LOL # it's "Stainless Steel" so I got it tigged up @ work mate I bought a 2010 cheap and cut it out myself at the forward seam, but I have no regrets doing a Poor Mans" Full Exhaust System!with the map from Jeffo she is really "Alive" & running Heaps Cooler with a noticeable lot less Heat coming off it ! I was gunna just get an 06-07 Header (bean07 Q & A ) like edgecrusher is doing as it has no cat @ all & just take it to an exhaust place to get it flared to suit the ends of my 2010 Leovince Slipons Midpipe as after 07 their about 1/8" "Larger Diameter,in hindsight im "Very"happy with the Larger Cavity in the 2010 Header,if you just buy slipons to suit the earlier one 1/8' smaller! then all you need is the 06-07 Header strip N fit only, even if I was fully active it would be a very hard akward thing to attempt on the bike mate, me as a newbie on the Exhaust it only took 5-6 hours to strip it down (with the Rad in place) & bolt the modded header back up ! As for the db shes not alot louder but heaps deeper sounding now,I let a mate take her out Sunday & my best mate Goody went with him on his bike & replied after coming back "Steve Boy she sounds realy great now LOL

Thanks a lot bean! Pictures are worth a thousand words; easy to see why getting it out of there on the bike would be pretty much impossible. (I dunno why I had the impression that the cat was in the midpipe rather than the header collector. I thought the cat was ceramic and in a straight section of pipe, and could be "punched" through.)

What did it take to get the cat out of there once you cut the pipe? Did it just break up?

This will probably be a project I'll save for when he bike has a few miles on it, and the temps here in Dallas are a tad cooler for working in the garage. (110 tomorrow!).

Your finished product looks great. Very helpful post, thanks again. Cheers!

G'day again bro once I cut it apart I attempted to punch it out with no success I ended getting my 240v drill and had to drill the Cat out by underminig it enough "75%"to get long nose pliers & an extension bar to punch at it !theirs long plug welds holding it in I first tried opening them up to no avail! it is easier just to drill heaps of holes the way I ended up doing it,theirs actually two cylindrical pieces, where I cut it (so it still looks "Stock") that opened flap inbetween the upper two & lower two pipes goes 1" further along towards the rear so if you need to keep it looking Stock when its back together then you need to remove the weld seams 1" further back ! I just cut right through as you can clearly seethis needs to be welded up to reseal the upper & lower pipes ! I noticed yer other thread in reguards to flies ya don't have to do that after 07 as well mate

Thanks again, Bean. I know a good car exhaust guy who can weld stainless, and he's cool about looking the other way when it comes to emissions stuff, so I'll pop the header off and take it to him, let him cut, remove the cat, and reweld.

BTW, I rode it home from the dealer today. 4 big miles so far! It's 110 in the shade here today, so I'm waiting for the sun to get lower before I get her out for a bit more of a spin. Was amazed at how much more responsive it is than my ZZR1200! (Even keeping it under 5,000 rpm. Can't wait until break-in is behind me!) Can see why I don't need to worry about the butterflies.

I am, however, ordering some risers and lowered footpegs today!

Yeh progrocker I could feel the big differance from my CBR1100xx when I first test rode the ZX14 too its so smoooooooth & Linear compared to the B/B. it was just last week when I received my 1" drop footpegs & put them on,another bro kolk has a thread on the ones I got, sinced the rear is bright aluminium so I got the same finish as I though the Black ones would ware and fade in time, my mate who rides her every time I do a mod being over 6' luvs them with the d/b screen.Dont know how clear it shows on yer screen over there mate but I'll post my latest photo last week you may be able to see the pegs! if not go to Accessories "Kolk" on 1" Lowered foot pegs.

Bean, your bike looks great. My new 2010 is the same color. (Only 170 miles so far, can't wait for the break-in to be over!) Your seat skin looks really good. I have a new Concours seat on the way, and plan to shave it down in the rear so the cowl will fit; wife rides on the Harley, but no longer wants anything to do w/rocketships. The 14 will be solo only.

I've learned what kind of heat the cats in the mufflers make, and with at least a month more of our TX heat to deal with, I'm determined to get some slip-ons on it asap. Will probably do that, and wait until the 1st Ice storm this winter to pull the header, and get that cat out of the collector. Now I know how to do that, thanks to you.. Cheers!

why thankyer fer that progrocker.I think another Bro did something slightly differant to his Concours Seat cowl Bro what he did is shaved the cowl down to suit his seat mate IMO if I had the Concours Seat I would just make a template out of carbord & shave the cowl to suit yer new seat bro just my

Bean, did you get you bike dydno'd after the header cat removal? I like the idea of using the gutted factory header and new slip-ons. Much more cost effective than Brocks Duals, for example. You say your bike really picked up after the header-cat removal w/Jeffos tune. Would like to know HP, and if your low end suffered? I like the low rpm reponse w/the stock system, don't want to lose that.

Thanks for all the info so far; much closer to doing these mods now that I have some break-in miles. Cheers!

No mate, over here The Dyno Cost is $250-$350 so I looked @ FAIC (Jeffo) fer $50 for a custom Map (Twin Leovince Slipons + a Gutted Headerpipe + PCV + OEM Air Filter + Operating Sea Level height 0 - 50 Foot + 90F Temp + 2010ZX1400 year) then payed him by Paypal then within 12 Hours I received the New Map bro ! then I got my computer Lap top to plug it in to the PCV & had my lad help me instal it as im not very good @ computer Tech (49 years old in three weeks LOL)but when I originally got it Dynoed with the PCV & Leovince Slipons It was at 164rwhp ,Since my stack June 14 Last year im on So I got my best mate Goody to take her to the Dyno for me After the fairing & R/H Slipon was replacedWhen he brought her back to my home he said Bloody Hell Stephen she got Heaps of Cohooners now! then about two months ago I bought another 2010 header Pipe & got the Custom Map from Jeffo installed, the next day Goody took her out
yesterday my Son & I put Jeffos Custom Map on her,I new straight away she was running better & "Cooler",WOW Jeffo ! You are the best 100% mapping Tuner! Goody took her out down a Country Back Road he said I only opened her up 3/4 throttle Hell ! Shes A Hole New Beast Mate" ! in third gear I overtook a car @ 3/4 throttle & Man O Man she is so Responsive, she nearly "Ripped my Arms off Bean ! I passed this car then looked in the mirror & the car was out of Sight (Long Straight Road), Wow shes a Totally Differant ZX14 Mate the "Take off" from 3500rpm on is Stunning he said with the Cat gone & Jeffos "MAP" she stayed on 1 Bar Temperator( it's a mild 16c today) To finish Off Goody said he would really luv to know how much more rwhp From before (164rwhp)shes

I Took her out this morning & gave her a few good squirts Hell she sounds Orsum & is Very quick compared to the last time before Jeffos map
